+ How did you discover and uncover electronic music? And how did Collothen start?

What got me into electronic music originally would be Bjork and Aphex Twin (pretty much anything Richard James has done). Before I heard Aphex Twin and Bjork I listened to mostly heavier bands from Helmet to Dillinger Escape Plan, and then when I heard Aphex Twin’s Drukqs and Bjork’s Homogenic I was really blown away by how unique and innovative they were and that opened my mind up to experimental , ambient electronic music.

The Collothen project started out by being inspired by all of Richard James stuff and wanting to start experimenting w/ electronic instruments, so I bought a Korg ER1 rhythm synth and that led to buying more and more gear and writing more and more. At the time I was playing guitar full time in a heavy band called Vihara and in my down time from playing all that heavy stuff I would write ambient electronic stuff and it was a nice refreshing change from all the heavy progressive metal stuff. It didn’t take long and writing and producing this stuff started to just take over and I thought why not try to get this stuff out there.

+ What excites you creatively, spiritually, emotionally?

Any kind of art that is genuinely moving, innovative, original or inspiring. I’m a huge fan of artists like Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Cy Twombly. I find a lot of inspiration in their work as well as their lives. I actually kind of wish I was a painter sometimes so to be honest, when I sit down to write a piece I’m taking the approach that I’m painting but just doing it with electronics. Haha. I find a lot of inspiration in really well done movies as well, and of course I find creative inspiration from other musicians/artists that are doing great things in their genre or niche.

+ You have a release on Xynthetic Netlabel, Translation…….Can you Explain or Talk a little bit about the release and how does it differ from your upcoming release Frenetic on Decisive Sound Records?

With Translation I was just trying to make a release that as a whole if you listen to it from front to back it could kind of take you somewhere else, and you could just get away from reality for a bit. In a pleasant, contenting, euphoric kind of way. Frenetic is definitely a lot different from Translation in the sense that I was trying to do a completely different thing. With Frenetic I wanted to go in the opposite direction and make heavy, dark, uncomfortable music. With the exception of one track, it is probably the exact opposite of Translation (haha).

Also too, after Translation I got the feeling people thought I could only write mellow ambient stuff and I write probably way more heavy stuff than I do ambient stuff. So when I listened to all the stuff Decisive Sound was embracing and putting out I was like, “perfect! These guys might like this heavy, dark stuff that I’ve been really wanting to put out.” Now no one can say I only write ambient stuff! (haha)

+ You have another project you work within, and on, called Warm Gadget. Can you talk briefly about that, and how does it differ from the work you produce with Collothen?

Warm Gadget is a studio band that I started shortly after Vihara took a much deserved break, which has started turning into a real live band recently. I still have that need to write heavy music so after Vihara I just started programming all the drums and playing the guitars, bass, keys myself and started to like where they were going. I hit up my friend Tim who is the vocalist for another band who we used to play w/ all the time, and I talked him into putting vocals to the stuff and really like where it was all going.

Warm Gadget is my attempt to have a band that incorporates a lot of electronics, samples and programming w/ heavy guitar, bass and vocal stuff. Like Godflesh meets Fantomas.

+ What is your most inspirational all time favorite piece of equipment be it software or hardware?

I would have to say my Emu xl7. Definitely. I love that piece of hardware. I’ve got a lot a hardware and I use all of it but I use the xl7 on everything! It’s a great sequencer and I love the functionality of it, its very versatile and I always know I can get what I’m going for if I’m using it.

+ What releases are in heavy rotation for you right now? and is there anything your looking forward to hearing in the future?

I listen to a lot of different kinds of music so they’re kind of all over the place. I would have to say Ulver’s Shadows of the Sun and Lyckantropen Themes, Marching Dynamics The Workers Party of Haiti, Godflesh Hymns and Slavestate, Bohren & Der Club of Gore Sunset Mission and Black Earth, Sleep Clinic Traffek ep, Access to Arasaka A Sky Now Starless and Port, Lucid Reflections Bevroren Maanden, A Childs First Funeral Suffer Tree, Irepress Sol Eye Sea 1, Car Bomb Centralia, Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine, Fantomas Suspended Animation, Aphex Twin I Care Because You Do and Selected Ambient Works Vol 2. I could go on but I’ll stop (haha)

I’m really looking forward to Sleep Clinics Deities, I’m really looking forward to the new Access to Arasaka. I’m hoping there is another Fantomas record coming. I hope! And I’m really looking forward to hearing the new Carlos Trevez project from Ronny from Lucid Reflections.

+ Whats your favorite planet? and why?

I would have to say this one we live on. Its quite a gift if you think about it.

+ How long did it take you to complete this interview?

I’d say about 45 minutes or so. I definitely think about my answer’s too much when its not a phone or face to face interview. (Haha.)
